Austin Bradford Hill's landmark paper contains several important lessons for the current conduct of epidemiology. There is, to my knowledge, no really good book on medical statistics at all. Most books provide collections of "recipies" and do not promote understanding or "statistical thinking".

Abstract InAustin Bradford Hill wrote Principles of Medical Statistics (Lancet: London, ) that became renowned throughout the world and is widely associated with the birth of modern medi. Hill had a distinguished career in research and teaching and as author of a very successful textbook, Principles of Medical Statistics, but he is famous for two landmark studies.
He was the statistician on the Medical Research Council Streptomycin in Tuberculosis Trials Committee and their study evaluating the use of streptomycin in treating tuberculosis,  is generally accepted as the first randomised clinical trial.
In Austin Bradford Hill described the minimal conditions establishing cause and effect in medical diagnosis. Temporality There is a time relationship between cause .When one thinks of the output of text books and treatises on statistical method it is hard to believe that there is anything left unsaid which is worth saying.
